Numerous countries across the globe are presently undergoing a significant demographic transition, leading to a rapid acceleration in population ageing. This phenomenon is particularly noteworthy in Asian countries, where this shift is occurring at an unprecedented rate.
Recently, the ILO and the ISSA have explored the role of social protection policies in ageing societies. Findings show that they can be essential in: 1) fostering healthy ageing through a life-cycle approach; 2) ensuring that older persons in need of long-term care can access it without hardship; and 3) extending adequate social security coverage to all caregivers and care workers.
Asian countries such as Japan, the Republic of Korea and Singapore have well-established dedicated long-term care (LTC) schemes. However, other Asian countries have only recently started developing policies to address LTC in the context of population ageing.
